The Bronx is New York City's northernmost borough. It is the only one of the city's five boroughs located on the United States mainland rather than on an island. The United States Census Bureau determined that the borough's population was one million, three hundred fifty-seven thousand, five hundred eighty-nine as of two thousand five.
