Charlton was first settled in seventeen thirty-five. It become a separate district in seventeen seventy-five, and was officially incorporated that same year. The town celebrated its two hundred fiftieth anniversary on two thousand five. Charlton public schools are part of the Dudley–Charlton Regional School district. The town of Charlton has schools to serve children of all ages. Charlton Elementary serves students in kindergarten and first grade. The Heritage School serves students in grades two through four. The Charlton Middle School serves grades five through eight. Charlton High Schoolers, ninth grade through twelfth grade, attend Shepherd Hill Regional High School in Dudley. Charlton is also home to Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School which serves Charlton and surrounding communities. There used to be a high school in the center of town called Charlton High School. That building is now used for the Charlton Municipal Offices. There were three thousand, seven hundred eighty-eight households out of which forty-five percent have children under the age of eighteen living with them, sixty-seven percent were married couples living together, nine percent had a female householder with no husband present, and nineteen percent were non-families. Fourteen percent of all households were made up of individuals and four percent had someone living alone who was sixty-five years of age or older. The average household size was three and the average family size was three. In the town the population was spread out with thirty percent under the age of eighteen, six percent from eighteen to twenty-four, thirty-four percent from twenty-five to forty-four, twenty-two percent from forty-five to sixty-four, and seven percent who were sixty-five years of age or older. The median income for a household in the town was sixty-three thousand, thirty-three dollars, and the median income for a family was seventy thousand, two hundred eight dollars.
