Damascus is a town in Washington County, Virginia, United States. The population was nine hundred eighty-one according to the two thousand census. Damascus is located at the northern end of Holston Mountain, over which the Appalachian Trail runs. In Damascus, the Transamerica Trail crosses the Appalachian Trail; they run roughly in parallel and intermittently cross for two hundred twenty-five miles northeast to Rockfish Gap. Damascus is the home of the annual Trail Days festival, and is known as Trail Town USA due to the convergence of four scenic trails in the town, including the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Creeper Trail. The Trail Days festival is held around the end of May each year and draws in excess of twenty thousand tourists. In the town the population was spread out with eighteen percent under the age of eighteen, six percent from eighteen to twenty-four, twenty-five percent from twenty-five to forty-four, twenty-eight percent from forty-five to sixty-four, and twenty-two percent who were sixty-five years of age or older. The median age was forty-five years. For every one hundred females there were eighty-six males. For every one hundred females age eighteen and over, there were eighty-three males. The median income for a household in the town was nineteen thousand, eight hundred eighty-six dollars, and the median income for a family was twenty-nine thousand, two hundred fifty dollars. Males had a median income of twenty-five thousand, five hundred dollars versus eighteen thousand, five hundred dollars for females. The per capita income for the town was fourteen thousand, nine hundred ninety-five dollars. About thirteen percent of families and twenty percent of the population were below the poverty line, including twenty-eight percent of those under age eighteen and seventeen percent of those age sixty-five or over.
