Dallas, Texas History
After some tribulations and problems with local Native Americans, Dallas was incorporated into a city in eighteen forty-six just as the Republic of Texas became a part of the United States. Bryan 's cabin, moved seven miles from its original location, is now in the West End as a monument to the hardy spirit of Dallas' birth.
Like the rest of Texa , Dallas ' history was largely influenced by the cattle market, the discovery of oil, particularly in East Texas and the railroads. Indeed, the railroads were what finally brought Bryan's vision into reality as the Houston & Texas Central and the Texas & Pacific railroads came through Dallas in the eighteen seventies facilitating a boom in population and commerce. Old City Park: The Historical Village of Dallas located at the corner of Gano and Harwood Streets is another great place to experience Dallas ' past. Old City Park tells the history of Dallas' citizens through thirty-eight relocated historic buildings and a collection of artifacts dating between eighteen ten and nineteen ten.
Dallas' infamous sons and daughters are often romanticized as having a truly individual and independent spirit; outlaw Belle Starr's reputation for rebellion is lauded, bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde are falsely remembered as champions of the poor and even the fictional J.R. Ewing, the embodiment of ruthless ambition, is seen as a man carving out an empire for the sake of his family.
One of the things Dallas is most famous for is the TV show from the eighties of the same name. The immense popularity of the show about a scheming oilman and his equally scheming family resulted in fan pilgrimages to a ranch used for exterior shots called Southfork. It's now open as a resort and conference center and offers tours. Ya'll don't forget to take a souvenir picture of yourself with the house in the background.
Sports fans know that Dallas is home to " America 's Team," the Dallas Cowboys, and their equally popular Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. Most Dallasites love football. Texas Stadium remains the place for watching a football game for now, but the Cowboys will be moving to a new stadium in Arlington soon. Also in Arlington, the beautifully designed ballpark in Arlington, Ameriquest Field, is home to the Texas Rangers baseball team. Spectators sit comfortably and, thanks to well-placed large screens, every seat has a view as well as a waiter to take snack or dinner and drink orders. |
