New Orleans Attractions
Normally when tourists or first-time residents come to New Orleans, they have a difficult time understanding the city. It looks like no other place in the United States. The first puzzling impression usually comes from the appearance of the French Quarter near many of the city's hotels. It is more than just a few blocks of townhouses and cottages standing side-by-side, up against the sidewalk. The size of the district startles even those well traveled in the rest of the nation. Few visitors, moreover, are accustomed to such a melange of people moving at all hours of the day and night in the very center of the city. They quickly learn that bars have no closing hour, that the food is spicy, and that the music is pulsating almost everywhere. And they may also take note that the locals talk funny but seldom have southern accents.
The French Quarter, also known as Vieux Carré - or the Quarter to locals, sits on a crescent in the Mississippi River on some of the highest ground in New Orleans. Not only is this is city's cultural hub, but is a community where residents take time to reminisce with neighbors about times gone by and to welcome visitors in the streets.
Lakeview - named for its close proximity to Lake Pontchartrain - is a moderately affluent neighborhood filled with frame cottages and brink ranch-style homes. This section of the city is marked as being bound by Lakeshore Drive, Orleans Avenue, City Park Avenue and the Jefferson Parish line. Within this area are four separate neighborhoods: Lakeview, Lakewood, West End and Navarre.
The Natchez is the pride of the Mississippi River and is as beautiful as any of her namesakes. Many of her crew has been with her since her maiden voyage. Theirs is a whole new chapter in history of the river, and you can be a part of it. True to tradition in every detail, boarding the Natchez makes you feel as if you have entered another era. The captain barks his orders through an old-time hand-held megaphone. The calliope trills a melody into the air while the great wheel, twenty-five tons of white oak, churns the heavy waters of the Mississippi. You soon find yourself slipping into a sense of the old, vast and timeless river.
Royal Carriages started in nineteen forty-one by Clem and Violet Lauga with one horse and carriage. Over the years, the company has grown steadily into a full-service carriage company employing fifty people and stabling a like number of young draft mules. The company has remained in the family, one that has a legacy of over sixty years experience in the New Orleans sightseeing industry. The fact that Royal Carriages is a family-run business is one reason why we are the oldest, continually-operating sightseeing carriage company in America.
